Rough Monoliths

2018

Powder-coated aluminium

Rough Monoliths is a collection of unique powder-coated aluminium vessels. The project started with an interest in expanded polystyrene (EPS) and its characteristic EPS beads structure. By shaping blocks of EPS using only hands, and no tools, to create shapes, the beads keep their unique structure and tactile surface.

“By removing tools from the shaping process, a more direct and intuitive situation occurs where the shapes develop more naturally.” – Troels Flensted

The foam vessels are then cast using a classic investment casting technique in a foundry in Denmark. After cutting off the sprues, every vessel is ground and polished before they are powder-coated with a deep blue high-gloss.
